Ethylene glycol Introduction

Ethylene glycol (EG), also known as ethylene glycol or 1,2-ethylene glycol, with the chemical formula C2H6O2, is the simplest aliphatic diol. At room temperature, it is a colorless, odorless, and sweet viscous liquid with a boiling point of 197.3 ℃ and a melting point of -13 ℃. It can be miscible with water in any proportion and has active chemical properties. It can undergo esterification, condensation, oxidation, and other reactions. It is a core basic raw material in the chemical industry, but it is toxic (human ingestion can damage the central nervous system and organs, and metabolic products are highly toxic).

Ethylene glycol Applications

Ethylene glycol is a necessary raw material in the fields of chemical, energy, textile, and packaging. 92.5% of global consumption is concentrated in the polyester industry chain, and the remaining 7.5% is used for antifreeze, energy, fine chemicals, etc. It is a pillar chemical product of the national economy. The first major core use: producing polyester material (PET) by condensing ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid (PTA) to produce polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is the only core monomer of PET. Its derivative products cover the core areas of people’s livelihood and industry. Polyester fiber (polyester) is the world’s highest production synthetic fiber (accounting for 78.6% of ethylene glycol consumption), used in clothing, home textiles, industrial curtain fabrics, automotive interiors, non-woven fabrics. China is the world’s largest producer of polyester; Polyester bottle flakes: Food grade PET is used for beverage bottles and food packaging cans (accounting for 9.1%), with transparent, lightweight, drop resistant, and recyclable characteristics, and is a standard in the beverage industry; Polyester film/engineering plastic: PET film is used for adhesive tape base film, electronic component insulation film, lithium battery separator (new energy demand); PET engineering plastic is used for automotive parts and home appliance casings, balancing high strength and lightweight. Second major use: antifreeze/refrigerant/de icing agent Ethylene glycol is the most classic civilian and industrial application, with core advantages of extremely low freezing point, high boiling point, and excellent thermal conductivity. Automotive antifreeze: Ethylene glycol is mixed with water at a ratio of 40% -60%, with a freezing point as low as * * -68 ℃. It prevents boiling in summer and freezing in winter, and can also suppress metal corrosion in water tanks. It is the core medium of fuel vehicles/new energy vehicle batteries/electric drive temperature control systems; Industrial refrigerant: used in cold storage, chemical cooling equipment, central air conditioning, can stably transport cooling capacity from -50 ℃ to room temperature, suitable for food freezing and low-temperature chemical reactions; Aviation/rail transit de icing: a specialized de icing agent for aircraft wings and high-speed rail tracks, with low evaporation loss and no freezing in low-temperature environments. The third major application: natural gas chemical (hydrate inhibitor) ethylene glycol has strong water absorption and freezing point lowering properties, making it a core additive for natural gas extraction/storage and transportation. It inhibits the formation of natural gas hydrates and prevents pipeline/valve blockages (natural gas hydrates can cause mining interruptions); Recyclable and suitable for high flow natural gas processing scenarios, it is a must-have for the oil and gas industry. Energy sector: New fuel+hydrogen production raw materials (new energy core new demand) Ethylene glycol fuel cell: high boiling point (198 ℃), low volatility, high energy density, theoretical energy conversion rate of 98.9%, safer than lithium batteries, is a new fuel for liquid fuel cells, suitable for new energy vehicles and portable power sources; Water phase reforming for hydrogen production: Ethylene glycol is the best renewable raw material for hydrogen production. Through C-C bond cracking and water gas shift reaction, high-purity hydrogen gas is efficiently prepared, which is an important supplementary path for the green hydrogen industry. Synthesis of fine chemicals such as ethylene glycol ether, polyethylene glycol (PEG), and glyoxal for use as solvents, inks, lubricants, and plasticizers in coatings and other industrial applications (with a consumption proportion of 3.5%); As a polyurethane (PU) chain extender, it produces furniture foam and automobile seat soft foam; Pharmaceutical/daily chemical auxiliary materials: high-purity ethylene glycol is used as pharmaceutical solvent, cosmetic moisturizer (face cream/hand cream), and toothpaste moisturizing ingredient to maintain product humidity and prevent cracking; Synthetic Unsaturated Polyester Resin (UPR): Used for fiberglass, artificial marble, and shipbuilding, with an annual consumption of over 450000 tons of ethylene glycol.
