Product Introduction

Maleic anhydride Introduction

Maleic anhydride is an organic compound with the chemical formula C ₄ H ₂ O3. It appears as colorless needle shaped crystals at room temperature and is soluble in water and most organic solvents. It is an important chemical raw material widely used in the synthesis of resins, coatings, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, etc., but it is irritating and corrosive to the human body and the environment. ‌

Maleic anhydride Applications

1. Synthetic resins and plastics: It is mainly used in the production of unsaturated polyester resins and alkyd resins. These resins are the basic materials for manufacturing automotive components, ships, corrosion-resistant chemical equipment, and daily necessities.
2. Pesticides and pharmaceuticals: As an intermediate for synthesizing organophosphate insecticides and highly efficient and low toxicity pesticides, it is also used to prepare long-acting sulfonamide drugs and other pharmaceutical products.
3. Coatings and inks: It is used for manufacturing insulation paints, varnishes, and ink additives to enhance the insulation, weather resistance, and glossiness of coatings.
4. Paper and Textile: It is used as a sizing agent to improve paper strength in the paper industry and as an intermediate for synthetic fibers in the textile field.
5. Other applications Its uses include the production of plasticizers, food additives (such as fumaric acid, succinic acid), lubricant additives, and the preparation of polymer materials such as maleic anhydride through copolymerization reactions. ‌

Maleic anhydride Research

Recent research has focused on improving the synthesis efficiency of maleic anhydride and expanding its applications.
Green synthesis method: A partial oxidation process using C4 hydrocarbons or benzene as raw materials has been developed. By optimizing the catalyst and reaction conditions (such as temperature and pressure), the yield is increased while reducing by-products and minimizing environmental impact.
Innovation in polymer materials: For example, the synthesis research of β – pinene/maleic anhydride copolymers aims to prepare materials with higher molecular weight to improve the mechanical strength and heat resistance of coatings, suitable for high-performance coatings and epoxy resin curing agents.
Development of polycarboxylate superplasticizer: By copolymerizing maleic anhydride with monomers such as polyethylene glycol and acrylic acid, a high water reduction rate and low air entrainment concrete additive is prepared, which is suitable for high fluidity concrete. However, the cost and technical performance still need to be optimized.
Safety and environmental improvement: Pay attention to its irritant and allergenic risks, research protective measures and alternative processes to reduce the impact on health and the environment. ‌
