Product Introduction

MEG Introduction

Ethylene glycol is a colorless, odorless, and sweet viscous liquid with the chemical formula C2H6O2. It is the simplest diol. It is slightly soluble in ether and almost insoluble in benzene and its homologues, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and petroleum ethers, but can be miscible with water, lower aliphatic alcohols, glycerol, acetic acid, acetone, and other substances.

MEG applications

1. Polyester production: Over 90% of the world’s ethylene glycol is used to manufacture polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is the main raw material for producing mineral water bottles, takeaway food boxes, and polyester clothing such as T-shirts and dresses.

2. Automotive antifreeze: Ethylene glycol aqueous solution can lower the freezing point to minus 40 degrees Celsius and is widely used in automotive water tanks and industrial cooling systems.

3. Daily life: Used as a moisturizer in cosmetics (such as Est é e Lauder Brown bottles and Skincare cleansers), as well as in pharmaceutical solvents and industrial cleaners.

4. Other industrial uses: MEG is used for synthesizing pharmaceuticals, pesticides, resins, surfactants, softeners, explosives, etc. It can also be used as reagents, antifreeze agents, desiccants, and computer liquid cooling media.

5. Latest findings
Agricultural waste treatment: The research team of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs used ethylene glycol in conjunction with low melting point solvents to efficiently separate high content carbohydrates and well structured lignin from agricultural waste such as corn cobs. The hemicellulose retention rate was increased to 77.9%, and the lignin removal rate and fiber retention rate were both over 88%.
Changes in Global Supply Pattern: China’s MEG production capacity continues to grow, with an estimated global capacity of 61.9 million tons by 2024, of which China accounts for about 24%. The supply focus is shifting from the Middle East and North America to Northeast Asia.
